About SOFIIA

Just north of the forest-savanna transition zone of West Africa, there are many examples of unusually dense tall woody stands of vegetation surrounding local villages in what is an otherwise open (savanna) type landscape. Although the human actions through which ‘forest islands’ are created are now well established, the underlying biogeochemical mechanisms behind this intriguing phenomenon remain to be elucidated. The SOFIIA Research Consortium is working to provide this information.

June Capacity building workshops

The first SOFIIA capacity building workshop was held in all three African Institutions of FUNNAB, Nigeria, KNUST, Ghana and INERA, Burkina Faso in June 2015 under the general theme scientific method and communication and the science of forests and savannas.

The workshops were massively attended by over 200 postgraduate students and staff in all three Institutions including University of Ouagadougou.
